Written and directed by Maya Tanaka, “Honolulu” follows 12-year-old Yuki’s doomed Hawai’ian beach vacation. Inspired by ’90s tropical getaway aesthetics, we designed the title, graphics, and DVD packaging for the film.
Based loosely on a childhood memory, the design language of the film needed to reflect the setting and the emotions Yuki goes through in this vulnerable coming-of-age story. The hot pink color palette adds an intensity to the otherwise fun and almost comical type forms throughout the film. The custom made title is informed by retro post cards, t-shirts, motel signage, and matchbooks you might find on your way to the beach. Everything comes together to accompany the surreal nature of the film, fire lobsters and all.
